Suggestion for new Folding knife
I went camping this weekend and took my old folding lockblade. I used it a lot. When I got home I put it back in the BOB.
I am looking for a second good folding lockblade with maybe a 4 inch blade. All suggestions appreciated. E-A |
Re: Suggestion for new Folding knife
Funny. I was just sharpening my wife's combo edge SpyderCo Endura. It's a good knife for a reasonable price. Personally I'm rather fond of the Benchmade 710 Axis. The 710 gave me the longest service life of any folder I've ever had, quite a few years. I could probably even fix it now with some new screws and loctite. I'm generally very rough on my personal gear so take that as high praise.

Dang Rev $175 is steep for me. Looks like the right size and shape but to much for me.
Thanks E-A |
Re: Suggestion for new Folding knife
I decided to go for a number of Opinel #10 folding knives. They're cheap and solid. They're just not fancy. They have a wood handle and are available in both carbon steel and stainless steal.
If you're looking for an amazing knife, look somewhere else, but if you want cheap, solid and simple, the Opinels are great. They haven't changed for decades. I believe the design has been the same since the 1890s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinel |
Re: Suggestion for new Folding knife
Understood. www.1sks.com lists the 710 @ $119.99, which may still be high. I never buy fad gear but I am generally a fairly spartan man and spend little money on frivolties of any kind. My personal gear is one place where I allow myself to spend extra to get the best. I fully realize that in no way relates to anyone else's realities.
With that in mind I would also feel confident about the SpyderCo Endura my wife carries. It's a good knife and can often be found for just under $50 here, http://www.1sks.com/store/spyderco-e...ghtweight.html. Finally, the Gerber Gator is another good knife and can be had for around $30 at WalMart, Sports Authority and other stores. It is a competent knife with a useful blade and a comfy handle. |
Re: Suggestion for new Folding knife
Gerber Air ranger (fine edge). Its one of the best knives i have ever used and you can find them for around 70$ at certain stores or even 20$ for the serrated blade on ebay. Amazing, light, strong.

Re: Suggestion for new Folding knife
I do not mean to hijack this thread - but you guys might be exactly the ones to ask.
On the Shop At Home channel, they have a Knife Collectors show on which they show hundreds of pocket knives, folding knives and fixed blades at sensational prices. Some are from Frost or Hen and Rooster from Germany. I know next to nothing about knives but I watch the show sometimes and wonder how good those knives are - especially at the prices they sell them for. They claim the steel is steeled for hardness and they come with a lifetime guarantee - but the prices are so low it makes me very leery. Any of you have experience with these knives or have an insight into their products? Thanks! |
Re: Suggestion for new Folding knife
Stay away. Stay very, very far away. If anything of quality ever ends up on that show it was purely by accident. I've seen "locking" knives bought buy people who didn't know the difference from those shows. I could close them like a slipjoint with no particular effort. The blades were brittle, parts would fall off... I'm sure they have a lifetime warranty, the lifetime of the product, about 5 minutes. *shudders*

Re: Suggestion for new Folding knife
In high end folders, get an Axis lock.
Stay away from liner locks, I have an affection for them, but liner locks are not reliable. I loved everything about my old AFCK, until the lock failed. BTW Benchmade switched to Axis locks on their AFCK. Think I'll get one. dtnwn |

Love my Buck knife.

Re: Suggestion for new Folding knife
In theory Axis locks could fail, but
apparently they don't. My Benchmade 730 lock (Elishewitz) is very strong. But I must admit, I have NOT clamped the blade in a vise and whacked the back of the handle with a big rubber mallet. Can't think of a situation when a lock would be subjected to that kind of stress. |

I prefer to carry a lightweight Gerber in my pocket for everyday use, but if I'm going camping or hiking, I like having my trusty old 110 in it's nice leather sheath on my belt loop. They hold an edge good too. |
Re: Suggestion for new Folding knife
Bought a Spyderco Endura in 94 and still carry it today. Use it all the time, NEVER had a problem with it. Bought some others, but I kinda like spyderco's for some reason.

Re: Suggestion for new Folding knife
I carry a SOG Flash II at work, and have an identical twin for it at home. They can be had for around $70, and have held up very well for me. Just my $.02.

Re: Suggestion for new Folding knife
i discovered this knife a month or two ago and boy is it nice....for the price?!? can't find much better. the clip is also reversable to where when you pull it out of your pocket, the thumb "horn" catches and opens the blade in one motion. good stuff. I bought two this thing is soo good!

Re: Suggestion for new Folding knife
A few things to think about, other than favorite brands:
I like a very thin knife, as I carry it in a front pocket, and I don't like the bulk of a thick one. I prefer carbon steel over stainless. Holds an edge longer/better. I prefer a conventional blade to serrated. I can't sharpen a serrated blade. I carry a 2 blade "trapper" style knife in a hip scabbard 90% of the time. It's not a lockblade, but I like the 2 blades (One for "surgery", stays razor sharp, blunt end so as not to accidentally stab me, a helper, or a bovine on the "operating table". The other blade is for cutting wire and leather and in general beating up.). It is handmade, hammer forged from Solingen Steel, a mix of carbon and stainless. When I'm dressed up, I carry a Spyderco "Jess Horn". It's very thin and easy to carry for a knife of it's size. Nice sharp point, but it's half serrated and the handles are plastic. I'm a little afraid if I had to put some serious weight behind it, it could break. I used to have a similar knife with a smooth blade and a stainless handles. I loved that knife, but I lost it somewhere on a hunt.:thumpdown |
